Efficient Heating Through Air Tightness and Ventilation

When building a new home or renovating an existing one, one of the main considerations is heating the home as efficiently as possible.  This is why so much focus is put on making houses as air tight and as insulated as possible to try and minimise heat loss

A side effect of a well insulated and air tight house comes the issue of what to do about Ventilation.  If an air tight house is not ventilated it will not take long for issues due to moisture and condensation to begin occurring.  That is where the HRV system comes in.

Heat Recovery Ventilation is a whole house ventilation system and works like this.

Fresh air is drawn from outside at a controlled rate.  At the same time, warm stale air is drawn from the wet rooms (Kitchen, utility, Bathrooms) inside the dwelling at a controlled rate.  The fresh air from outside and the stale air from inside cross paths in a heat exchanger where the heat from the stale air is transferred to the fresh air which then provides warm fresh air to the habitable rooms ( Living room, Dining Room, Bedrooms etc) at a controlled rate.

The controlled or regulated rates are set out by Technical Guidance Document Part F (TGD Part F) for Ventilation.  TGD Part F specifically outlines how Ventilation should be designed for a dwelling and we at Energy Solutions Ireland design, install and commission as outlined in TGD Part F with design drawings and commissioning certificates available upon works completion.
